-Buffalo

-Rochester

-Binghamton

-Syracuse

First Impression:The XROAD V4100 has smart sleek design. The 4.3" screen is very nice. It looks contemporary and feels well built.

Results:

I opened the box and started using the XROAD V4100 without reading any instructions. I was able to figure out how to use all the basic functions in no time without any problems.

The GPS took a long time to acquire the satellite the first time I powered it on. It was a typical Rochester, NY day - heavy overcast. Afterwards, every time I turned on the V4100 it took only a few minutes to acquire the satellite signal.

Entering your desired destination is very easy. The readout and display of information is very intuitive. The road maps and directions are easy to see and follow. When it gets dark the V4100 automatically switches to night driving mode, which is nice and very easy on your eyes.

As I began using the V4100, it performed very well. It indicated an upcoming turn well in advance so that I had plenty of time to get into the correct lane. The voice prompts are clear and easy to understand. There is no volume level indicator when you go into navigation mode. I kept trying to turn the volume up without knowing if it was already on the maximum setting. With that being said, I think that this GPS unit could use some more volume. Sometimes it was difficult to hear especially if there is wind or traffic noise.

The V4100 is very accurate and did a good job in keeping up with my location on the road as I traveled around. Once it acquired the satellite signal, there were very few dropouts. It was very quick to recalculate my route when I missed a turn. So far I found the road maps to be quite good. The Point Of Interests (POI) is a bit lacking. It does include all major shopping malls and attractions.

I did not attempt to use the music or picture function of this GPS. Why would I want to play my music through the ¼" speaker of a GPS unit while traveling my car which has a stereo?

Conclusion:If you can get XROAD V4100 for under $150 it's an excellent value. GPS performance is excellent and the voice prompts are great. It will get you were you want to go safely and accurately.

NOTE:

This unit comes only with US maps. If you travel across the border, this is not the unit for you.ed

All About GPS and How It Works

GPS or Global Positioning Systems are computer systems that use satellites in orbit around the globe to provide exact longitudinal and latitudinal position of the user. GPS units were originally designed by the Department of Defense for military purposes and are now used on the consumer level for day to day navigation. Some GPS units sell for less than $100.00 and as long as you have one and have a clear sight of the sky you will never be lost again. In fact most GPS receivers can pinpoint your location on the globe within about 50 feet. GPS units vary in price based on their quality and capabilities, so when shopping for one it is important to know what you are planning to use it for.

GPS systems are mostly used by consumers for two purposes, positioning and navigation. GPS units are placed on boats so boaters can have an idea of where they are in comparison to the shoreline. In cars they are more often equipped to provide directions to the driver from two different points. Some of the more expensive models come equipped with voice capabilities so that drivers don't even have to take their eyes off the road. Many handheld models are sold to outdoor enthusiasts for camping, hunting and hiking. These handheld models also range in price based on their capabilities and if the display comes in color or not.

Most GPS units will also provide you with some standard and useful information…..

· An Odometer (Distance you have traveled)

· Time you have been traveling

· A Speedometer (How fast you are currently traveling)

· Average speed for the journey

· A map of you trail so far

· E.T.A (Estimated time of arrival)

GPS units use four satellites orbiting the globe to triangulate your position on earth and can do so with extreme accuracy. If you are constantly lost behind the wheel or spend a lot of time in the outdoors purchasing a GPS unit might be the right move for you.

Advanced GPS Devices: Hello? I Am There Soon!

Development of communication technologies allowed people to access to others as they are mobile without losing their contact with their social milieu. And last minute meetings, daily changed plans and cancelled appointments became a part of our lives. Most of the time people owning a mobile phone have to explain the reason why they are not accessible. So communication is handled on individual basis, location restrictions gained minor importance. It means that a person does not have to lose contact with his/her social milieu whether he/she is at home, work or in a car.

We do not have much difficulties in using our devices to reach communication technologies as we are at home or walking on the streets. The issue gets tougher when we started to drive our cars. The main actor in the car is the car, making the course decisions and using the in-vehicle devices. Normally a driver’s task is to drive the car safely without causing any danger for himself and the passengers. But a driver is not a robot programmed only to achieve one mission, meaning that human brain has the capacity to carry on more than one job at the same time. Although that situation is in favor of the driver, concentrating on many things can cause deconcentraion on the driver’s seat.

Mobile phones, undoubtedly, remain the most significant device for in-vehicle use. As mobile phone usage brings about questions during the course of the cars, many countries started to discuss this issue in detail. And many countries banned to use mobile during the course of the cars. As some countries allow to use mobile phones with “hands free kit”, some countries banned it in a strict way.

My starting point for my thesis was to establish some projects to solve the problems about the currently used in-vehicle technologies. I already had some questions in my mind requiring answers: How do the in-vehicle technologies affect our behaviours in the car? How better can the interfaces of those devices be designed? How better can i meet the communication demands of the driver?

I started my study to interview with drivers to know their in-vehicle needs. My purpose was to find the anwers to those questions in general: What is the relation of the driver with his car? How often and which purpose does he motivate to drive? What does he need as he drive the car? As well as with my face-to-face interviews i held a survey with similar questions and sent to people to get a mass feedback. My purpose was to acquire a leitmotive that i would like to focus on. The respondents explained that they have one or more mobile phones. Although it is forbidden in-vehicle use of mobile phones in their countries, they did not hesitate to use their mobile phones.

One of my projects is called navigation system interface. Currently used road navigators is based on to trace the map located on the console or the next turn is passed to the driver through a warning voice in some systems. Such road navigators play a significant role for the deconcentraion of the driver as he tries to trace a small display. Mostly used audible warning systems could be disturbing as the music is on the car or passengers are talking to each other. To me the road navigator should function without deconcentrating the driver, as the main target of it is to navigate.

My second project is Pronto, which integrates navigation and communication for in-vehicle use. Respondents underlined that the their most phone calls are intented to know where they are. Such calls can be decreased thrugh the communication of in-vehicle devices. With Pronto, driver matches his mobile phone with the car once and then as he enters his car his mobile phone and in-vehicle system will be synchronized via bluetooth.

My point for both projects was to reshape current technology and devices to match with people’s demands. Now both projects await for the production as feasible and practical systems in the near future.

Closing words are for the users’ now. Drivers having the opportunity to try those projects said they look forward to use those systems in real life as well. If people’s motivations are considered in depth as technology is shaped, it would be possible to launch long life and exciting products.

I was born and raised in Turkey and I traveled around the country since my parents are teachers. Spending my childhood and teenage years reading all sorts of books, eating chocolate and peanuts, listening to first New Kids on the Block, then metal music, studying for the university entrance exam to be a kick-ass economist, I managed to get into a brand new university, moved to Istanbul, never took a single economics class, tried computer science, flirted with cultural studies and art, went to exhibition openings for free booze, met people, walked through every interesting bit of the city, danced like no one is watching, took billions of photographs, eventually ended up getting a BA in visual communication design.

12 Practical Uses of GPS for Everyday People

GPS or Global Positioning Systems is a term that most commonly conjures up images of vehicle navigation systems, space-age satellite technology, and interactive maps for outdoors-types and sportsmen. But the reality is that there are far more applications of Global Positioning Systems beyond GPS vehicle tracking or map navigation that everyday people like us can benefit from. All it takes is a bit of creativity, and some trial and error. Here are a few of the many possibilities that can benefit you right now in your busy and hectic life.

1. Know where your children are using services from companies like uLocate Communications.

2. Keep track of elderly members of your family, so that they don’t wander off alone.

3. Plan a road trip around interesting points of interests, landmarks, campsites, diners, etc, and hear fewer "Are we there yets?"- and of course get the most out of that expensive gas.

4. Get emergency road side assistance at a touch of a button from your vehicle, so you can get help exactly where and when you need it.

5. Keep a visual journal and bookmark collection of your favorite hot spots, sceneries, and points of interests, that may not be listed in any travel guide (You can create your own mini travel guides and memories).

6. Find lost pets easily using collars with built-in GPS, better than running around in your pajamas hollering like a maniac.

7. Feel safer with cellular phone 911 calls, so emergency personnel can pinpoint your location once you make an emergency call. Please double check your carrier service to see that it has GPS features and get a primer on how it works if possible.

8. Get to your interview, or any important time sensitive destination or engagement, faster by finding shortcuts and correct directions.

9. Find a good Italian restaurant near your movie theatre on the fly.

10. Track your luggage, laptops, and anything of importance while traveling.

11. Track and find family, friends in a crowded concert, graduation, or any social gathering.

12. When going on a vacation, feel free to separate from group for a while to venture on your own based on your own interests and find them later on with your GPS enabled device- even in an unfamiliar place.

Our ability to use GPS so far is limited by the relatively poor connection to the satellite feeds when we are indoors in buildings, homes, or behind anything that could obstruct the GPS connection. However with the investment and development in a new satellite network called Galileo which should be completed in the near future, these problems should be eliminated drastically. Despite these problems, GPS still offers a world of benefits as mentioned earlier, and with any technology, it will only get better.

In addition to more practical usage applications, GPS will make a great educational and fun gift for your loved one’s and friends as well. Consider just two of the many creative and educational uses of GPS:

1. Stay physically active and fit by playing RayGun! A locational based cell phone game based on GPS technology.

2. Become more cultured, make global friends, and learn about the world playing GeoCache, a global GPS based treasure hunt.

With many affordable feature-rich models to satisfy anyone’s preferences and budgets, now is as good a time as any to learn more about GPS technologies, which are surely to become more assimilated into the mainstream within the decade. One day we will take these things for granted just like we do now for the internet and cell phones. The key is to dive in, without paralyzing yourself with the overwhelming array of choices in the GPS market, and enjoying some truly amazing technology.

Visit GPSZoom.com for a dizzying array of ways in which GPS can improve your lifestyle including with GPS tracking services for people and vehicles, and for those adventurers at heart- technology to help you conquer the outdoors, one trail at a time.

Why Buy a Spot GPS Tracker?

What is Spot anyway? Let's try to give it a simple explanation. We all know what a GPS is and how it can and is used. A GPS will certainly get us where we want to go and do so very accurately and we will know exactly where we are. A GPS will not tell anyone else where we are even if we need to tell someone. OK, we all have a cell phone and we can take the GPS data and give it to someone on our cell phone. That is just fine as long as we in fact have some cell phone connectivity. Maybe we don't have cell phone connectivity but still need to tell someone where we are. That is where SPOT gps personal tracker comes in. A SPOT gps personal tracker will not get us where we want to go but will tell the world where we are and even tell the world the relative degree of help we might need or just to tell someone we are OK. Let's look at some ways SPOT gps personal tracker can effectively be used and provide you with some good reasons to buy SPOT.

An obvious one - for the outdoor adventurer

Anyone who goes off the beaten path either on foot or some sort of mechanized vehicle may from time to time find themselves in need of emergency help either because of some sort of mechanical failure, personal injury (any medical emergency) and find no cell phone connectivity. SPOT will alert the necessary personnel and get the help you need as quickly as possible. Emergency personnel will be able to locate you within 20 feet and do so without spending days and thousands of dollars attempting to find you. You need SPOT.

Less than obvious - anyone

While you may not consider yourself to be an outdoor adventurer, you may find yourself in a situation where you have had an accident, or need immediate medical assistance. Or you might find yourself in a life threatening situation such as a blizzard, flood or avalanche. You may or may not be able to use your cell phone but even if you could, maybe you don't even know exactly where you are to tell someone. You need SPOT.

Maybe you want to be a little clever

Upgrade your SPOT gps personal tracker to include the tracking option. At that point you can track anyone or anything virtually anyplace in the world - all over the internet. If it is a person you are tracking you can enjoy seeing the progress made. If it is a piece of equipment which someone has taken without permission, this too can be tracked right to its exact location for recovery. All of this can be done very easily since the device weighs only 7.3 ounces and place exactly where you need and want it. You need SPOT.

Cell Phone GPS Tracking

The development of communications technology has long since surpassed the sole ability to access others when they are mobile. Today, mobile communication devices are becoming much more technologically advanced and offer more than the ability to just carry on a conversation. Cell phone GPS tracking is one of those advances.

GPS or Global Positioning System tracks your location by interpreting the data received from 3 or more satellites. This has made GPS a popular feature in cars as a navigational aid.

All cell phones constantly broadcast a radio signal, even when not on a call. The cell phone companies have been able to estimate the location of a cell phone for many years using triangulation information from the towers receiving the signal. However, the introduction of GPS technology into cell phones has meant that cell phone GPS tracking now makes this information a lot more accurate.

With GPS technology now more commonplace in many new cell phones, this means that the location of anyone carrying a compatible cell phone can be accurately tracked at any time. Cell phone GPS tracking can therefore be a useful feature for business owners and fleet managers who need to be able to keep track of their vehicle movements.

Cell phone GPS tracking can also be a useful feature to the emergency services or police when responding to a 911 call from a GPS cell phone. For this reason, the FCC has legislated that wireless networks provide location information for 911 calls made from cell phones. These are known as E911 calls.

As technology advance even further, future features will be even more powerful. Imagine GPS cell phones used as a navigational device. Based on the cell phone GPS tracking signal, they could be used to find your way to a location, calculate your speed based on your location change over time, from this calculate your estimated arrival time, suggest an alternative route and even phone the person you are calling to see with your ETA! Of course in car GPS navigation systems can already perform many of these tasks, however it is the portability of cell phones that makes them so useful for this technology.

Cell phone GPS tracking could also be used to locate the whereabouts of your children and offer protection to elderly relatives should something happen and they need urgent assistance.

These features will help to secure the future of cell phone GPS tracking providing advantages for all.

Cell Phone GPS Tracking - Privacy Issues

Although there are many advantages to cell phone GPS tracking, there are also privacy concerns. As most people carry their cell phone with them at all times, the ability is in place to track the exact movements of all individuals. Is this a case of Big Brother, and who can access to this information?

Cell Phone GPS tracking can prove useful in many walks of life and especially when an emergency arises. Picture the scene of a road accident where injuries have occurred. A 911 call made from a GPS cell phone would significantly speed up the arrival of the emergency services if the GPS signal from the cell phone can be pin-pointed to an exact location. This feature alone could save many lives.

For these reasons the FCC has instructed that wireless network providers provide the cell phone GPS tracking location information for 911 calls which have been made from cell phones. This is known as E911. In essence this is no different than a 911 call made from a land line, as the land line is registered to an address and the relevant emergency services can be quickly dispatched to that address.

However, where the difference occurs is that a property does not move but the tracking of a GPS cell phone is registering the day to day movements of an individual, and that has given rise to the privacy concerns of who can access such private information.

However, the relevant law relating to E911 is fairly explicit. It allows carriers to provide tracking location information to third parties for e911 emergency calls only, however not under any other circumstances whatsoever without the consent of the cell phone owner.

The privacy of cell phone GPS tracking has also been backed up by a number of recent court hearings. Recent court hearings have disallowed the requests of law enforcement agencies to obtain cell phone GPS tracking information from the cell phone companies for suspects. The courts have ruled that Congress have not authorized location tracking without actual evidence of wrongdoing and that probable cause is not sufficient reason for the release of records.

These events will ensure that the advantages of cell phone GPS tracking will not be compromised by privacy issues and that its long term future and usefulness is secured.

Buying a Satellite Navigation (Satnav) System for Your Car

Once they were only for the rich and were only fitted in the very high end cars but today SatNav systems are available to all. You can either opt for the in-car fitted systems that are still quite expensive or you can go for the handheld or protable units. This article is about the latter.

What is SatNav?

SatNav is a system that comprises of 2 elements, a GPS data receiver and a CPU/display unit. The receiver gets information from orbiting GPS navigational satellites and communicates it to the CPU/display unit. This unit is then able to find its exact location on the planet by comparing signals from various satellites.

The unit incorporates road maps of the area and places an indicator on the map showing where the car is on the maps.

Features

The units allow you to plan a journey ahead of time and then the unit will guide you to you destination by displaying a map showing you where you are and the direction you should be heading. Most now have voice instructions so the unit will tell you, when you are approaching a junction, which turning you should take. The units are also capable of making real time adjustments to the route, this means that if you go the wrong way the until will recalculate the route to your destination taking into account the wrong turning you have just made.

Maps

The maps for the unit can be loaded for the different regions you visit, so they may have a map of the UK and another for France and so on. Most modern unit have the maps stored on a removable memory cards like SD cards or similar memory card but some units read directly from a CD or DVD. The display can be set to show the conventional flat map view or the new 3D view that shows a view as if it was above you and looking forward. This view is very good and clear.

Traffic

Some units offer systems that will warn you of road works/traffic jams etc as they happen, and offer suggestion as to how to avoid them.

POI

Most units have POI's (Points of Interest) incorporated into them that will show things like garages, restaurants, historic sites, airport and ferries etc. You can also add your own POI's of your favourite places. One POI that is very popular is the location of all the speed camera and accident black spot locations.

Weather

Another feature that is becoming increasingly available is the weather for a location. The system will tell you the weather at a certain location on the map i.e. at that beach location you are planning to visit.

When you want to plan a journey you will need to enter the start and end destination, this can be done in a number of ways, the city, street and house number. The street intersections, the post codes and a location chosen on the on screen map. The start can be done in the same way with the addition of the present location as the starting point (remember the unit knows where you are). There are then itinerary or way points, these allow you to program destinations along the way. Finally you are usually presented with choices of routes with choices like, Fastest Route, Shortest Route, Scenic Route, Avoid Motorways etc some have the choice to avoid toll charges.

Fitting

The units can be fitted into the car in a number of ways but the 2 most popular ways are with a mounting bracket that has a strong suction cup that sticks to the windscreen. The second way is a bracket that fixed to the cars air vents, this method can be very good but required a fixing for each type of car. The unit is then fitted to the brackets and adjusted to the best viewing angle.

There are dozens of systems available now with a variety of choices of the options available. You need to choose which of the above options are important to you and then choose the until that best suits you or suits you price range.

7 Ways GPS Can Save You Time, Money, Your Mind, and Even Your Life

Here are 7 ways to save with GPS:

1. Have a personal trainer at a fraction of the cost!
Devices such as the Garmin Forerunner GPS provides a way to keep track of the time, speed, distance, and pace information for athletic activities. It also provides a way to measure the amount of calories burned based on a variety of customizable personal options and factors.

2. Save on Gas, brake wear, etc on your car as you drive more efficiently.

3. Find where you want to go faster: important business meetings, life events, but also to save your own time so you can use the balance to be with your loved ones.

4. Gain peace of mind knowing where your children are, whether your elderly parents have wandered off, or when and where your family pet has wandered off your premises.

5. Save money on your car insurance. Some auto insurance providers, in return for allowing them to implement GPS tracking devices on your car, can help you reduce your premiums.

6. Run a more efficient business with time tracking of employees and prevent lost company time and money.

7. And the most important reason is that GPS can help save your life from reckless driving, etc. Such as providing voice prompts when you are approaching your specific destination, warnings that you are going over the speed limit, advanced notice of potential accident blackspots, etc.

Two more bonus reasons on how GPS won't make a significant dent in your wallet

1. Don't have to worry about new models coming out every few months like the PC. 1 Decent model from Garmin, Magellan, or Lowrance should last the typical user many years.

2. No monthly fees like internet, GPS Signals are free like radio waves. You just need a receiver. Advanced features such as tracking services are different (i.e. for your children, elderly, your valuable possessions, and your pets, and may cost a nominal monthly fee depending on the service provider and your needs whether commercial or private.

These are just some of the ways you can benefit it time/money savings as an individual. And just a few ways for you to get a good Return on Investment for your business.

Warnings/Caveats

Remember, that technology will NEVER subsitute basic common sense such as teaching your kids about personal safety, being a safe driver, etc. The best technology for all those starts within your own brain and senses. No matter what the big companies tell you, never let technology replace your own judgment but rather to complement and help refocus it.

Also just because GPS makes it simple to track your employees for instance, doesn't mean there are no human barriers to overcome such as the trust factor. It's important to explain to your employees in a manner that allows them to understand the business savings and benefits of incorporating such a tracking system, and is not designed to compromise their privacy and integrity. This applies to family members as well. If you think your family pet has issues with privacy then you may need to convince him/her if applicable.

Not a techno geek or have direct access to one? Visit Simon Wyryzowki's regularly updated blog with quality information without the fluff or extensive sales pitches. Get up and running in no time with GPS tracking services for people including your children and elderly, etc.

How It Functions

GPS is short for Global Positioning System. The system itself has 27 satellites all in all, 3 of them being spare satellites in case of failure. The system was formerly operated by the military for course plotting. Today though, everyone has access to a tracking system.

The satellites circle the globe twice per day. Every satellite is placed in a certain area in space so that a GPS receiver can establish the location of at least 4 satellites. Waterproof Marine GPS System

A waterproof marine GPS system is available in both a handheld version and a version that is mounted on your boat. And it does not matter if you have a tight budget or if you want to spend a lot to get what you want. Handheld models that float start under $200 and will provide the ability to save up to 500 of your favorite places in memory and chart a straight-line course to your destination. These units are also IPX7 waterproof to endure an accidental dunk in the water. They come preloaded with numerous cities worldwide combined with marine navigation aids like day beacons, lights, buoys, and sound signals. Whether you are boating, hunting or fishing, you have tide information, sunrise and sunset information, celestial data and a hunting and fishing calendar right at your fingertips. They are also WAAS (wide area augmentation system) enabled for precise accuracy to within 3 meters.

A waterproof marine GPS system can also be used in your automobile. Although these units are more expensive than a handheld, it can save a lot of hassles when deciding on a GPS system. The pre-installed auto-routing basemap will guide you on your way on major interstates and highways. An optional automotive kit that includes City Navigator® detailed maps, an automotive mount, and a data card to help you easily navigate on land. This kit, once loaded will provide voice-prompted turn-by-turn guidance to millions of addresses and points of interest. Maybe you are looking for a hotel restaurant, gas station or the nearest marine. No problem. You will find it.

A waterproof marine GPS system can combine a color chart-plotter and automobile navigation system that is perfect for wet or dry applications. Use it on your boat and then transfer it to your car. Now that was easy. When you are out on the water the sun can be strong so these navigators come with a TFT display that is easily read in bright sunlight. For extra-precise navigation a Course Deviation Indicator (CDI) that is normally found in aircraft, is included on some models. You will quickly be advised if you have gone off your chosen course, and will be guided back on track. You can also track external NMEA sources for water characteristics like temperature, speed, and depth.

>One unit can provide all you need for land or sea. Doesn't that sound like a great idea?
