GPS Devices

GPS

GPS units give the electronic routes and voice guided turn by turn directions to your destination. As technology has progressed in this field, you can get plenty of models in the market with various accessories and add on features, some extremely useful. The basic features you need to look out for before you buy one are explained in the following sections.

Map Capabilities

Most GPS models come with internal map capabilities. Manufacturer provides maps with details up to street level in the hard drive. The menu option enables you to access the desired data. Comprehensive street level maps can help you identify the coordinates of the destination on the map by using just the name, or locate the destination on map by giving the coordinates. For some models you will have to subscribe to a plan to update the maps on an annual basis.

Some models provide map information in memory cards having detailed information of a particular region. Thus you will need extra cards if you have to store information for more coverage. Map cartridges are more flexible but can prove to be expensive.

Some brands provide map information in CD-ROM, DVD-ROM discs.

Receiver type

There are 24 GPS satellites in six orbits around the earth. GPS receivers track these satellites to compute the information of your location, the bearing, distance and time left to reach destination and other route options. Since there are 12 satellites at a time in view, each of them is tracked continuously to generate the information. Latest GPS receivers marketed today are commonly 12 parallel channel receivers.

The associated advantages of tracking more satellites are:
faster cold start
regular initialization
better reception
do not require an external antenna if you are in an open vehicle

Other receiver types are:
20 parallel channel receivers
16 parallel channel receivers
14 parallel channel receivers

Display size

Large displays are a visual treat when you consider buying TVs but not the same when it comes to buying a GPS. The map on the display gives you information regarding:

current location
where next turn is
name of street you are turning onto
estimated time of arrival

While driving, casting your glance away a second longer can prove to be risky, hence a device with a smaller screen will be advantageous. The display should be easy to read irrespective of surroundings. The navigation aids come in various sizes. Some units with screen size as big as 7in. enable you to get connected to external video devices. Some hand held ones are as small as 1.5in.X 0.9in.) Some of the convenient, easy to read GPS are:

3.5 in.
2.in. x 2.1 in.

Resolution

Screen resolution decides how clearly you can see and read in broad daylight. Color, glare free LCDs are soothing to the eyes. High end models have color screens which gives information about weather and terrain. Some GPS units with different resolutions are:

320x240
480x272

PC Interface

The portable models have a USB or serial ports which gets you connected to a PC. It enables you to download latest maps and system software. GPS units with USB and serial ports can be found at:

USB:

Serial port:

Bluetooth GPS that communicates with mobile device wirelessly are also available.

Built-in memory

With larger memory space one can store more route information and waypoints. Units with software that can transfer data from the unit to a PC can be used to gather more data than it can hold. So depending on how much map data and information you wish to store, you can select the units with the required memory space. You get various models with wide range of built-in memory space.

1 to 30MB

30 to 512MB

512 to 2500MB

2500 to 40000MB

Antennas

External antennas are used when stronger signals are needed. If in a vehicle the system cannot be placed near the window, external Antenna hookups can prove to be ideal solution. Choice of external hookups is most practical for hiking under heavy tree cover, under tall buildings or in any place which doesn't have a good view of sky.

Built-in antennas are less prone to breakage and can communicate with more satellites.

Quadrifilar Helix- This is also an external antenna useful for situations where open sky is limited.

Flip up antennas too give strong performance.

Price

This is one factor not to be compromised on, if you don't wish yourself or your loved ones to get lost in the maze of roads. The technology in this field has developed rapidly and the old models which are cheaper may have crowded maps, or confusing menu options. Latest models high on price have more detailed maps. Of course, lesser the features lesser will be the cost. If you don't need features like live traffic data or weather data, don't invest money in models offering these features. Features like speech recognition for hands free operation, 3D maps, and information on fuel prices all come for additional price.

Under $200- You get good light weight portable navigation units in this range. Maps look great with reasonably timely route recalculations. Good value for money! Those of you looking for more memory space may check out models at higher range.

Between $200 to $312- You get better performance and features like anti glare, touch screen with good resolution. You also get good in-built memory space and battery life.

Between $312 to $416- Good screen settings, voice guided directions and overall good performance.

Between $416 to $1172- Accurate route guidance, easy to use and compatibility with Bluetooth cell phones are some attractive features of devices in the price range.

Brands

There are various manufacturers manufacturing GPS units with different features to suit a wide range of customers. The major brands available today are:

Garmin has many models of handheld and mounted types.

Magellan:

GPS Security And Privacy - Pros Vs Cons

As you may well be aware, there are many important benefits to consider when using the Global Positioning Satellite System (GPS). It is invaluable when trying to navigate in unfamiliar areas, but some people think it is an invasion of privacy. Security and privacy have been openly debated, and most adults believe that it is more beneficial than detrimental.

GPS tracking devices can provide monitoring data on a vehicle such as total miles driven, speeds that it was driven, traveled routes, as well as its current location. The sophistication and quantity of available monitored data varies depending upon the system and the make and model of the GPS device and vehicle of installation.

This is also widely regarded as an invasion of our personal privacy. To give one example, a standard rental car contract will often stipulate that if you go over 79 miles per hour, you will have to pay extra for the wear and tear that the car suffers. The car rental company can find out if you are going too fast by receiving information from the GPS tracking devices that are attached to the vehicle. Thus, if you go over 79 miles per hour, they will know, and you will be billed.

Frequently, parents believe that GPS security and privacy issues are minimal in comparison with the security of knowing the location of their child. In fact, some parents use GPS devices to monitor their child's location and activities. If their child fails to follow the parents' guidelines, these parents may opt to suspend driving and socialization privileges.

GPS cell phones no longer require people to purchase expensive hardware to track a loved one. Cell phone companies now offer this option. However most cell phones do not offer the user direct access to the GPS data. Accurate location determination requires the assistance of the wireless network, and the GPS data is transmitted only if a 911 emergency call is made.

Cellphones raise lots of privacy issues. Consumers are often not aware that their movements are recorded and tracked. Global Positioning Systems (GPS) reveal a person's location. This type of location data helps police with their investigations, such as tracking down a criminal or even someone who is lost or missing. They can act as a safety device to protecting your family and loved ones. Location technology also helps locate stolen cars. The technology for these tracking devices is constantly improving. However, there is some potential that tracking data can be misused.

As many of you already know, the Global Positioning Satellite System has a number of major benefits. It can be of huge assistance to those navigating in unfamiliar territory. But some people consider it to be an invasion of privacy. GPS security and privacy, has been widely discussed. GPS vehicle tracking devices can provide monitoring data, such as total miles driven, speeds that it was driven, traveled routes, as well as its current location. The benefit of GPS cell phones is that, with this technology there is no need of buying expensive equipment to monitor a loved one.

GPS Review - What To Look For

What makes a good GPS review?

It is more than difficult to find a good GPS review on the Internet. The reason is this: GPS devices all do the same thing. They show your location on an electronic map, and then show you how to get where you're going. Now, by GPS device I mean a car GPS device that you buy separately from your automobile and either hang from a bracket on your windshield or put next to you on the seat.

So, the key to a good GPS review is understanding the features that various GPS devices offer at each price point.

What do all GPS devices have in common?

All car GPS devices that are on the market today have a touch screen where you can enter information into the unit, such as your destination address. All auto-calculate the route to that address, and all give you spoken directions of some sort as you drive to your destination. In addition to this, virtually all GPS devices come pre-loaded with maps, usually at least of the continental United States, have an internal battery for emergency use, and can toggle between 2D and 3D map views. (3D gives you a slightly more realistic view of what you should be seeing in front of you.)

There are exceptions to all of these rules, but almost all are in the older models.

Who are the industry leaders?

There are three main manufacturers of car GPS systems, Garmin, Magellan, and Tom Tom.

Garmin sells about one out of two of all the car GPS systems sold in the world. They are known for making a quality product. Magellan was an early leader in GPS systems that can route you to more than one destination. They do not have nearly the market share that Garmin has. Tom Tom is a late arrival who is quickly catching up. According to Tom Tom, their GPS system, the Tom Tom One, is the best selling system in the world.

What are the main features to look for in a GPS system?

In this GPS review, let's start at the cheap end and work our way up.

You can buy a GPS system for less than $200. The Garmin nuvi 200 and the Tom Tom One, 3rd Edition currently sell for less than $200 at Amazon.

As you increase price, the main features you can add are

Voice prompts that actually say the street name

Cheaper GPS devices only tell you where to turn. They say something like, "Turn right, here." A good feature to be aware of is having the GPS device actually say the street name of the road you need to turn on. So, instead of "Turn right, here," a better GPS system would say, "Turn right on Highland Avenue," or "Take a left onto the entrance to I-95." Devices with spoken street names usually start around $300.

Another feature to look out for is real-time traffic and weather capability

Wouldn't it be nice if your GPS device could not only tell you how to drive from Atlanta, Georgia to Charlotte, North Carolina, but could alert you to bad traffic conditions in time to take a detour? Well, many of the more expensive units can. How does your GPS device know what the traffic is like up ahead? GPS devices that have this capability are tuned to either an FM or satellite radio frequency that broadcasts this information. If your device has this function, then it will usually come with a free trial subscription to this service. After that, it's going to cost you, but the cost is fairly low, especially considering how useful real-time traffic is. Along with real-time traffic usually comes real-time weather -- an added bonus.

Any of the Garmin nuvis from the nuvi 350 up have FM traffic capability. The nuvi 350 runs slightly less than $300 at Amazon. If you want a Magellan that route you around hold ups, you'll be paying $300 to $350. All of the Tom Tom's have this capability, even the Tom Tom One, 3rd Edition, which is one of the cheapest units on the market, currently running around $200.

Do you regularly use your cell phone while driving?

I know I do. It's problematic to hold the cell phone in one hand and negotiate your way through heavy traffic on a busy interchange. If your phone supports Bluetooth technology you can get a GPS receiver with that same capability and actually use it to make and receive calls. You answer an incoming call by just tapping on the touch screen. You make an outgoing call by either entering the number in your GPS's touch screen key pad or by accessing numbers stored in the device -- downloaded from your phone when you first set up your receiver. So, now instead of wearing that silly Bluetooth headset and looking like a member of the Borg Collective, you can just have your GPS device do double duty. If you make a lot of calls while driving, this is definitely a feature you need to think about.

As to what Bluetooth is going to run you, the Garmin nuvi 360 is their lowest priced Bluetooth model. It currently sells for slightly more than $300. Virtually all of their upper end products have Bluetooth. Two of the Magellan Maestro series, the 3250 and the widescreen version, the 4250 have Bluetooth. They run around $280 and $350 respectively. The Tom Tom GO series has Bluetooth. They run anywhere from $350 to $900.

Multi-destination routing

It's not something that I use much, but it's definitely worth knowing about. Multi-destination routing means you can enter multiple routes into your GPS at one time and it will calculate the best route that includes all of your destinations.

Garmin's nuvi 700 series does this, as well as a couple of their StreetPilot series. Most of the Magellan Maestro series does this - they can be programmed to hold up to 20 separate destinations. As for Tom Tom, the GO 510 can hold up to 15 routes. As to price, the nuvi 700s run anywhere from mid-$400s to almost $700. The Magellans are slightly less expensive, running from mid-$200s to the mid-$300s. The GO 510 costs slightly less than $500 at Amazon right now. The voice prompts, Bluetooth, and multi-destination routing are three of the more important features to consider.

Also, you want to keep in mind what maps your device comes with. And, almost as important, how many preprogrammed Points of Interest are included in its database.

Points of Interest

(POIs) are names, addresses, and phone numbers of possible destinations, anything from the nearest Starbucks to Yellowstone National Park. The lower priced units come with less than 1 million POIs. That's not enough, if you're going to be using this feature. For use outside of your normal travel routes, you really want a few million POIs. Virtually all GPS devices now come with this, except the lowest prices models, like the Garmin nuvi 200, which only has regional maps and less than 1 million POIs. (There's nothing wrong with fewer POIs, if you're not planning on needing them, but they sure can come in handy.)

Yet another feature to keep in mind is screen size. The standard size is 3.5 inches. This is measured on a diagonal. So the screen for the nuvi 270, for instance, measures 2.8" by 2.1". The so called widescreens measure 4.3 inches on the diagonal. You're actually getting 70% more screen this way.

Why is screen size important?

It has to do with ease and safety of use while driving. Personally, I like a wide screen, but then again, my car is fairly big and has a big windshield. The difference in price between a regular screen and a widescreen is about $80. That might be money well spent. On the other hand, if you drive a smaller vehicle with less windshield area, the wider screen might be more of a hazard than a safety feature.

Currently at Amazon, Garmin nuvis (their newer product line) run from $179 for the nuvi 200 to $699 for the nuvi 770. The Magellan Maestros are running from $168 for the 3100 to $356 for the widescreen 4250. Tom Tom's GPS systems are currently priced from slightly less than $200 for the Tom Tom One, 3rd Edition, to $899 for the GO 700 (which is overpriced).

Whatever you do, don't procrastinate. Even with a good GPS review, with all of these confusing choices it's tempting to just wait for whatever the next model is going to be. What you're missing by doing that is lots less stress while driving! Imagine, if you're a guy being able to always (really) know where you're going despite what your wife or girlfriend says. And, even better, if you're a woman you won't have to pester your husband or boyfriend to stop at the local gas station and admit that they're lost - not an easy admission for a guy. (I should know!)

GPS Auto Tracker Technology Saves A Life

The use of GPS auto tracker technology by business fleet managers and private citizens is growing daily. The savings in terms of maintenance, labor, insurance and fuel cost are enormous when applied correctly. Real time GPS more than pays for itself the first day it is employed. Some companies have even been able to reduce the size of their fleets to increased efficiency. Everyone knows that increased efficiency means a better bottom line. However there are additional benefits to using a real time GPS system.

Recently a large electrical contractor that operates more than 40 trucks over a 1000 square mile area contracted and installed a real time GPS auto tracker system in all of its vehicles. Most employees are allowed to take their work vehicles home after work. This saves the company both fuel and labor cost each day. Many of the employees felt that the company was playing big brother and invading their privacy. Some even suggested that they would leave once the system was installed.

Once the tracking system was activated and the fleet management staff trained in its use the company began to find ways to cut costs. Employees found that the system was not as intrusive as they had envisioned. The application of personnel and resources quickly began to make the company more efficient and contracts were being completed in less time. As a result the company was able to bid on additional work.

This past November found another benefit to using the GPS auto tracker technology that no one at the company expected. After a normal day of work one of the employees did not arrive home for dinner at the normal time. His wife at first passed this off as an extended work related delay. After a couple of hours she tried calling him on his cell phone but was told that the phone was not in service. Later being worried she called her husband's supervisor to ask if he knew where her husband was and of course he did not stating that no one was working late.

Shortly after receiving the call the supervisor went on line and downloaded the location map provided by the GPS tracking Service Company. He quickly found the missing vehicle located along the Interstate highway. After calling the missing employees cell phone several times without an answer he went to investigate.

Using his laptop and GPS he drove to the exact location that the tracking system had indicated. However arriving on the scene no company truck was located. The supervisor checked the tracking information and even contacted the service company for assistance. It was suggested that the tracking device had become dislodged and fallen from the vehicle at that location. Where upon the supervisor took a flashlight and went to look for it. Instead of finding the device his flashlight reflected off the back of the company vehicle lying upside down in the roadside ditch. The missing man was trap inside and was still alive.

Emergency response personal arrived shortly thereafter extricating the injured man taking him to the hospital in serious condition. The employee survived the accident and is recovering at home. He hopes to return to work in the near future. According to law enforcement and emergency services personnel the employee probably would not have survived if he had not been found at the time he was discovered.

GPS auto tracker technology is designed to help businesses and private citizens in managing their vehicle resources. However as was discovered here there are additional benefits that this emerging technology provides. It can even save lives.

GPS Systems - How Advancement In Technology Can Make Life Simple

Have a history of stolen vehicle where you could do nothing about it? Well, had there been a GPS Vehicle Tracking System installed in your vehicle, the thief would have been apprehended. This then is just one of the several uses this technology offers.

GPS (Global Positioning System) technology and its application have certainly come a long way in the last five years. It started as a government program in the late 1960s and early 1970s primarily for military navigational purposes until President Ronald Reagan promised that the technology would be available to the general public for free.

The GPS Vehicle Tracking Systems helps you notify your communication device when someone is tampering with your vehicle. You can program the system to send calls to your cell phone, blackberry, and other communication devices. It helps you navigate around problem areas, such as construction zones and traffic congestion while providing alternate routes to desired locations. It is excellent for monitoring teens driving habits with real-time vehicle location with photos.

Backpack GPS units are being developed to guide the blind people through the intricacies of the cities. Farmers use GPS to survey their fields so that they can distribute fertilizer more efficiently. Hikers use it to guide themselves on their mountain climbs, bicycle tours, marathon runs, rally competitions. Rescue and salvation crews use GPS to locate and speed the assistance to people during emergencies. Pointer Dog-GPS by Pointer Positioning Solutions has a device that is made primarily for hunting.

This technology helps the Fleet Managers to track and monitor employees and vehicles, to recoup time and money, for asset tracking, to stop employee moonlighting, to increase productivity, and decrease fuel costs.

If you are a Car Rental Manager you could benefit from this technology for for boundary violations, asset management, for easy rental vehicle tracking, to coordinate vehicle maintenance and service checks, to remotely lock/unlock vehicles doors, and to recover stolen vehicles.

This technology also helps in efficient delivery of products and materials. There are real time vehicle tracking systems that allow companies to track the location of company vehicles from a central location. The central dispatchers can track movements on a visual mapping system and determine the actual location of the truck and guide the driver to the proper location.

GPS systems have gone beyond just serving the army. Anyone from Couriers, Firefighters, Municipal Managers, Snow Plow Drivers, Waste Removal Engineers, Mobile Caregivers, Law Enforcement who wishes to ensure the safety and well being of their drivers, vehicles and cargoes make use of the GPS technology.

GPS systems are indeed becoming a staple in the society, working to make our lives easy and interesting.

GPS Systems 101

When you are considering which GPS system to purchase, there are several things you need to look out for and know about. The first thing to think about is what type of GPS (global positioning system) you require - do you need a car GPS, or do you simply want one of the best GPS systems available? Do you want a boat navigation system? Do you need a mobile GPS system or a fixed one? For example, the Magellan GPS Roadmate 700 gives you voice and visual directions, so with this global positioning system you really can't get lost. What's more, this GPS system has a touch screen, and an auto-complete feature for when you're entering addresses, meaning no more misspelled addresses or suburbs. While we're speaking about addresses, you can create an address book you're your favorite or popular destinations. This Magellan GPS system really has it all!

Another one of the great GPS systems is the Magellan Roadmate 2000 GPS auto navigation system. This car GPS system boasts over 1.3 million pre-programmed points of interest, and has a function that helps you avoid traffic! Use global positioning to not only work your way through the city streets, but in the quickest and least stressful way (although, we can't help with the husband or wife's backseat driving)!

But not only can you purchase the best GPS systems to help you get around town - you can also use them as a GPS auto tracking system, for those of you who truly value your automobile and can't bear the thought of anything happening to it. With a GPS system tracking your car, if the worst happens and your car does actually get stolen, the global positioning system can be followed to wherever the suspects might take it - or it can be intercepted by the Police before real harm comes to it! No more worrying about where you car will end up if it is stolen!

Mobile global positioning can also help with keeping track of wayward teens who borrow your car - no more do you have to worry about where your son or daughter has taken your car, you can simply keep track of it via the global positioning devices you have installed (and your children don't even have to know the GPS system is in your car!). Plus there is the added benefit that the GPS system will help your children get from A to B, and not get lost in between - very important for any parent!

GPS solutions are many and varied, so before you go out and consider all the GPS systems, have a think about why you want it (keep track of your beloved vehicle, or monitor your son who just got his license and a new girlfriend?) and for what vehicle - boat, car, bike or something more adventurous! Your global positioning system is an investment for many reasons, so do your research and don't make a decision you'll regret.

Global Position Systems - How Do They Work?

Global Positioning Systems seem to be popping up everywhere nowadays, from inside your cars to your cell phones to even video games. But how exactly does a Global Positioning System work? They're not as complicated as you may think.

Global Positioning Systems utilize satellites in Earth's orbit to transmit signals to GPS receivers on the surface. In order for a Global Positioning System unit to work properly, it requires a precise reference of time. This is why all GPS satellites are outfitted with atomic clocks that are always synchronized not just with each other, but with all GPS units on the ground.

Each GPS receiver uses a minimum of four separate satellites to determine your position on Earth. Each satellite uses a spherical system that helps the device to judge your location. Depending on how far away from your location on Earth the satellite is, the larger the sphere is. Using these spheres as a base of reference, the GPS device can determine its precise location inside each of the spheres generated by the satellites, as well as on the surface of the planet based on where the spheres intersect.

The United States alone has at least twenty-four GPS satellites in orbit, and worldwide there are hundreds of satellites from many different countries using many different GPS networks, however they all act on the same atomic time principle. This means, in short, that no matter what kind of GPS device you have, no matter where in the world you are, your GPS receiver will be able to tell you exactly where you are.

So how accurate is a GPS device? Well, the typical GPS device you can buy at your local outdoor equipment retailer is accurate usually within a ten to twenty meter area. Other GPS devices, usually those issued by the federal government to military forces, can be accurate to within three meters.

GPS - Garmin Nuvi 250

I have been meaning to write about the Global Positioning System, otherwise known as GPS, that "Santa gave us" this past Christmas.

A GPS is a portable travelling device for your vehicle, while on foot, or even during your bike ride in the trails. It is compact enough to fit in your hand. The GPS communicates with satellites and guides you to your location. Whether it's local or global, it can get you there, as long as you have the required model. Basically, it's like having Mapquest available to you at all times without having to print out your directions, plus more!

My husband had always wanted one, and with me not being very familiar with these gadgets, I thought it as "Just boys and their toys". After doing much research, we decided on purchasing a Garmin Nuvi 250 over the TomTom One. Just a quick comparison, TomTom One did not seem too user friendly, in addition, it had too much on the screen. In some cases it can get confusing while driving when you have too much to look at. Where as the Garmin is nice and simple, first point of screen tells you what you want to know and if you would like to know about additional information such as: your speed, distance, etc, then a simple touch screen button can take you there. Also, TomTom uses TeleAtlas maps that are intended for European navigating. Garmin, in my opinion, is more users friendly over the TomTom, and it uses Navteq mapping, intended more for North America.

The Nuvi 250 is one of the lower models and it doesn't have all the bells and whistles. It does your basic navigating and just a little bit more. We got ours for roughly $330.00 (in 2007); this includes taxes and a two-year warranty. Included in the box along with the device are the instructions, car charger, and a mount for attaching it to your dashboard or front window shield while driving. The Nuvi is also ready to use straight from the box as is. No pre-charging needed, just plug the charger into the lighter outlet and you're set. We also purchased a simple case for $29.99 to protect the screen, since it is touch sensitive. This can be found at Best Buy. It's a good idea to maintain your device if you plan to invest a few hundred dollars.

Surprisingly, I too use it, probably more often than he does! The Garmin Nuvi 250 is great to use locally, for long driving trips, and any other types of travelling. You have the option of setting the mapping to automobile, bike, or on foot. Using this GPS saves so much more time because you don't have to worry about getting lost. It calculates the amount of time it will take to get you to your destination. If you bump into any traffic it re-calculates your estimated arrival time. Even if you miss your turn, it will automatically re-calculate your trip and provide you with a detour. This particular model tells you how long you have until you make your next turn and which side your destination will be, whether it's left or right. For example, it will say, "turn right in 300 meters", "arriving at destination on right, in 100 meters", and on top of the screen itself, it will let you know what the name of the street is. You can also change the voice of the commentator from an American to British accent. We have ours as British to add some spunk! Higher models will actually say the street name as opposed to just saying the distance. We didn't find this to useful for us; we thought we could take a quick look at the screen if we need to know what the street name is. For an extra hundred dollars it wasn't worth the spend.

If you have the extra two to three hundred bucks to spend, you can expect additional features like MP3, Blue Tooth Technology, added memory, and traffic updates. Keeping in mind, that a GPS is intended to guide you with your travels, not music. A security feature that I found quite interesting was, when an access code is applied, the device will ask you to hold up the GPS outside in order for it to search the satellites and this becomes your security identity location. In other words, if you are at a restaurant and so happen to forget your access code or you end up blocking it, you must go to your security location and it will unlock it for you there. If you had been at a friends' house when you applied this code that would have been your security location. The only downside to this is, having to drive out of the way to unlock it. Then again, no one else would be able to use your GPS if it becomes lost or stolen, unless they know your security location.

Garmin provides you with thousands of points of interests (POS). This is my favourite part of the GPS. All you need to do is enter what you are searching for and it gives you a list of items. In my case, I love to enter "shopping" and it shows me a list of merchants that are nearby. This is particularly great when we're out of town and I'm not too familiar with the area. Along with shopping centres, are restaurants and foods; there are hundreds of options to choose from! There are plenty more of POS, these are just the ones that I use a lot. For those who need it, the Nuvi 250 can also store pre-set routes. When you have a certain route everyday, just select your favourite route and you're on your way! Other features consist of an SD card slot for downloading additional maps from the Internet or for viewing a slideshow of pictures. Personally, I don't understand why they would have a feature to view pictures but it's there.

The only negative thing that I can think of, in my case anyway, is that I rely too much on the GPS that I don't get to know the streets and figure it out for myself. So, when there comes a time that I won't have my navigator on hand, I'll be completely lost! Otherwise, I'm so glad my husband wanted one, because I benefit from it too! Of course, this is just my opinion; you'll have to try it out for yourselves.

I would recommend the Garmin Navigator to anyone who is interested in purchasing a GPS.

Garmin Nuvi 250 GPS is Beginner-Friendly

Not only is the 200 series great for beginner's, it is affordable. Targeted at the budget conscious buyer, the Nuvi 250 lacks all the slick bells and whistles, but it performs best at what it should - navigation. After all, that is what a global positioning system was intended to do. Some of the common specifications of the Garmin Nuvi 250 GPS are:

  • Pre-loaded NAVTEQ maps for the US, Canada, and Puerto Rico.
  • 3.5" color touch display
  • Turn-by-turn instructions
  • Approximately 6 million Points of Interest
  • Photo viewer
  • Calculator
  • World clock
  • Currency and Unit converter

Here are some features that you might want, but the Garmin Nuvi 250 lacks:

  • Text to Speech
  • Bluetooth
  • Traffic Updates
  • MP3 Player
  • Headphone or Audio outlet

Here is what comes in the box when you buy the 250:

  • Nuvi 250
  • Windshield suction cup
  • 12V cigarette lighter power adapter
  • Dashboard disk for mounting
  • Setup Guide

There are two main groups that provide mapping data: NAVTEQ and TeleAtlas. Fortunately for Nuvi fans, NAVTEQ is far superior to TeleAtlas. The bad news is that Garmin does not offer free map updates to its buyers. You will likely have to shell out over $100 to get a current map update for your GPS unit.

The routing engine in the Garmin Nuvi 250 GPS is also very solid. The routing engine is what helps make decisions in the route that it suggests to get from one point to another. This Garmin unit tested better than the TomTom ONE and the Magellan Maestro. This coupled with the excellent NAVTEQ mapping data provides a very solid performer at navigation tasks. Let's also not forget the best part of the Nuvi 250 and that is its unrivaled ease of use. Your tech-challenged grandmother should be able to operate this GPS unit.

Garmin GPS Systems - Your Complete Guide

So you have decided to buy one of the many Garmin GPS systems available. You've spoken to everyone you know, and now you need to start getting information together - how much do you want to spend on your Garmin GPS system? Where will you be putting your new Garmin GPS system? Which one of the Garmin systems are you going to pick?

First, you need to undertake various Garmin GPS comparisons. There are many versions available, for many types of vehicles and requirements. When comparing Garmin GPS navigation systems, it's best to go with what is best for you, not what someone else has or what might seem the best simply because it is the most expensive. For example, you may have been recommended a Garmin GPS handheld unit by a friend who does a lot of bushwalking, but as a boating person, a handheld unit would not be as useful to you. Similarly, a Garmin portable GPS system is great for someone who is in and out of a car, as they need to take it with them to prevent theft. However a fixed Garmin global positioning system would be better for someone who has no need to be removing it from its mounting all the time (or someone, like a courier, who is in and out of their vehicle more times than they care to think about!). You definitely don't want your Garmin GPS system to be a hindrance!

Compare Garmin global positioning system prices, and see if it might be cheaper to purchase a Garmin GPS system online. Many places sell Garmin global positioning systems online, so be sure to have a look around as it may be cheaper (even taking into account postage) to buy your Garmin GPS system from an outlet that does not have the overheads a physical shop-front might have. The issue with shopping online is, of course, not being able to 'play' with your new Garmin global positioning system. But a trip to the local GPS shop may fix that.

One of the Garmin GPS systems available is the Garmin 2720 GPS. This particular Garmin GPS system offers many features, including the ability to program points of interest (such as speed cameras and school zones) so you need never be caught out again. The flashy Garmin 360 GPS doubles as a personal assistant, boasting facilities such as MP3 players, a translator, and Bluetooth capabilities enabling you to make hands-free calls. Another good pick is the Garmin c530 GPS - ready to go straight from the box, this unit is a good pick for those needing an ATM or petrol station quickly - just touch and go!

Garmin GPS systems offer it all; the hardest part is picking which one you like. Read some Garmin global positioning systems reviews, which are usually unbiased and give both pros and cons for each model. With a Garmin GPS navigation system, you can't go wrong!

Garman GPS

Garman GPS is really Garmin GPS. Definitely, Garmin has become the most recognized name in the manufacture of consumer GPS products. Their name appears to have become one and the same with the GPS product. The company has an exceptional history for producing quality and adaptable GPS units.

When Garmin began their goal was simple. Their goal was to create tools to make navigation by people as simple as possible. The GPS products that they have created are used for outdoor enjoyment, aviation, fitness, automotive, and marine purposes. Each category provides numerous options to suit your needs and financial budget.

One example of text to speech functionality is on the Garmin StreetPilot c340. This function provides the option of operating hands free so you do not have to take your eyes off of the road. This allows you to keep your focus where it should be. On the road. There is no need to look at the display as you hear all the information that you need.

Operating like this allows you to hear instructions such as "Turn left at next intersection" well ahead of time so you can react smoothly to the instruction. A great plus when you are traveling in a strange city, and are running late for an appointment. You an also receive up to the minute traffic information to help avoid traffic jams, or construction re-routing allowing you to reach your destination faster and safer.

You can also get a unit that will update satellite weather data that has colorful maps and can provide warnings on potentially threatening weather. Although we have barely scratched the surface of the automotive offerings, there is so much more that Garmin has to offer. Being customer focused they have created products with simple menus, options that are logical, and instinctive features.

Whether you call it Garman or Garmin they have:

Automotive products to assist drivers get where they are going easily while enjoying the journey.

Marine units that complement your detailed charts with other important information.

Aviation units that provide technology to provide pilots with at-a-glance, accurate information.

Fitness tools that enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of your workout.Hikers, geocachers and campers enjoy the ability to retrace routes and save routes already traveled for future use.

And even wireless applications that provide GPS capabilities to your smart phone.

Check out the options available from Garmin. They have whatever you are looking for. And who knows what they will create next?

Don't Ever Buy A Garmin Nuvi 350 GPS

While the Garmin Nuvi 350 may have received over a thousand five star reviews all over the internet, it's still got plenty of problems. Not every GPS is right for every person. While I'm sure you can find plenty of reviews on how great the Garmin Nuvi 350 is, let's just take a second and honestly highlight some of the major flaws with this unit.

First and foremost, if your reason for using a GPS does not include a car, then stop reading right now, and start looking for a different GPS. The Nuvi 350 is primarily meant for navigating in an automobile. That's not to say you can't take it on a hike with you. It does have a built in battery. It's just there are other GPS units designed specifically for non-automobile travelling such as sailing, hiking, or motorcycling.

The built-in lithium ion battery is not user serviceable. Meaning, that when the battery dies a few years down the road (no pun intended), you'll have to ship it off to Garmin and have them replace the battery. As if the inconvenience of not having your GPS while it is being "serviced" (10-14 days) is bad enough, it will cost you about $80 plus shipping to have Garmin do the work. Extremely inconvenient, but not as expensive as it used to be. When the Nuvi 350 first came out Garmin was charging about $250 to replace the battery. While you may luck out, and get an original battery that lasts longer than the GPS, it's a bit of a crap shoot. Of course, if your the type that doesn't mind ignoring "do not open" manufacturer labels, you can probably find a 3rd party replacement battery, and do the work your self.

Based on the customer feedback I've heard, about 1 in 10 Nuvi users have some sort of major navigational problem while navigating with their Nuvi 350. That includes, sending users in the wrong direction, picking a route that is not the quickest one, losing satellite signal during a critical navigation point of a journey, or simply not being able recalculate a new route in a timely fashion. While navigation failure is not always the fault of the GPS, the smart consumer should keep a few points in mind when setting their expectations as to what the Nuvi 350 is capable of. While navigational software has come a long way, it's no where near as good as it will be in a few more years. In other words, there's plenty of room for improvement. Things change a lot. New roads, subdivisions, bridges, shopping plazas, office buildings, points of interest etc etc etc. A GPS unit like the Nuvi 350 is only as good as it's database. It's an enormous job to keep track of all that.

As a side note, there is one practice that could potentially save you a lot of grief as a GPS user. I'm a part time sailor, and a big fan of GPS devices. I use one extensively when I go sailing on long trips. But, I would never dream of sailing any significant distance without proper paper maps / charts. I don't care how many bells and whistles your brand spanking new GPS has. It's probably going to fail at some point. Always carry a paper map of any unfamiliar areas you may be travelling to. Don't rely 100% on your Garmin Nuvi or any GPS to tell you where you are, or how to get somewhere else. It's just common sense.

If you've read this far, I obviously haven't scared you off from using a Garmin Nuvi 350. At the very least, you should consider some other nice GPS navigators. It's always good to be informed, and have a few choices for comparison. It's the best way to make an educated decision.

When you are looking to purchase a new system, be sure to check Magellan GPS ratings before you make a decision. You may find that the particular feature you need in your GPS model is rated better with one specific unit. Once you find the Magellan GPS system that best meets your needs and has good ratings, it is time to make a purchase!

Cell Phone GPS

A map of the world at your fingertips seemed impossible only a few short years ago. Today it is nothing unusual. In the same way, it has become common for people to be able to use a cell phone GPS navigation systems to find directions to anyway. Just as amazing is the fact that the GPS in cell phones provides the direction for police and emergency workers to find you in an emergency situations or even to locate a missing person. More and more people are utilizing this development.

The GPS started to be developed and used by the federal government. Nowadays, ordinary citizens are able to receive the benefits of GPS in their everyday lives. GPS works because there are constantly released signals when the phone is on. Even without a call the GPS can track the phone. A signal is picked up and received by the receiver, telling the user the location, direction, and speed of the cell phone.

GPS track cell phones better than triangulation that was used before GPS technology. Triangulation determines which three cell phone towers to which phone is the closest. That is how they determine the approximate location of the cell phone. Although it isn't as precise, sometimes as much as tens of meters off, it did give a pretty good indication of location. The Cell Phone GPS, on the other hand, can pinpoint the location of the cell phone within about five meters. That makes the GPS roughly ten times more accurate than triangulation.

The use of cell phone GPS have helped to save lives and continue to help. Since the cell phone GPS is nearly pinpoint accurate, it can help with both emergency 911 calls as well as missing person situations. For instance, if a person is missing, and his or her cell phone is left on, the phone can be traced using the GPS. This is an amazing advantage to the investigation. Today, most cell phones have GPS capabilities so when someone calls 911, the phone sends the GPS information to the 911 operator.

The compact size of cell phones allows cell phone navigation systems, like the VZ Navigator by Verizon Wireless. This system and other systems like it have become very popular become they let the user access various maps. When the to and from locations are submitted to the phone, it will show step-by-step directions. It's amazing what a small, but advanced tool this cell phone GPS offers to today's fast paced, technological world.

There has been a major growth in the GPS cell phone technology over the past few years. The helpful and convenient features that used to be used only by the government but can now be utilized by ordinary people in their everyday life. The small size, great accuracy and easy mobility has made the GPS cell phone increasingly popular and we will most probably continue to see growth in its features and usability continually each year.

Can GPS Tracking Help a Business Save Money?

Like anything that we use to improve our personal lives, GPS tracking devices also have very useful applications for business owners. The same way a GPS device can help you get to the store or a friend's house is the same way it can help your employees reach a destination to make a delivery or meet with a client as well as allow you to monitor productivity.

People use GPS in their personal vehicles to help them save time and reduce gasoline use and you can use this technology for the same purpose in your business. The efficient use of your company's vehicles will result in great savings for you in so many levels.

By having a destination already mapped out for them, your employees will know how much time it will take to reach a certain place. Although they may want to factor in time for traffic or to park, there will be no need to leave time "just in case we get lost." As they say time is money. Shaving time of off business trips will lead to savings in fuel costs. The savings from reduced gas usage will definitely add up-whether you have a few company cars or a fleet of vehicles.

In addition to reducing time that employees spend traveling, the addition of a GPS tracking device to a company vehicle can reduce work time overall. If employees spend less time on the road, they will have fewer work hours to report. You may not realize it, but some of that overtime you have been paying out can be attributed to time spent on the road. Using GPS tracking can even make a difference in payroll.

The vehicles your organization uses can stay in better condition for longer because you have opted to use GPS tracking devices. The more they are driven, the more wear and tear they will take. By using a GPS you will be ensuring that in addition to regular maintenance, you have done what you could to keep them in great shape. You will reduce costs in the short run by saving on gas and in the long run by getting the most out of each vehicle you purchase.
